Ceramic tiles were laid onto floor boards, have taken them up but the adhesive is hard to get off?

Ceramic tiles were laid in the bathroom on top of floorboards, they did not put underlay down first, I have taken the tiles up but the adhesive is thick, what can I do to take it off, I have tried chiseling but will take a very long time
