Question about getting hair cut?

So everytime ive been getting my haircut its been really short mostly, but now my hair is sorta shaggy and i don't know a good way to get my hair cut cause trying to keep shaggy hair ends up into a bowl cut every time you get your haircut it seems like. Which is why i never try to keep it and get my hair cut short, but my girlfriend sorta likes it better then shorthair so anyone know anything i could tell the barber to keep it sorta shaggy but shorter?
